Is there any hope for the doily, the perpetual symbol of grandmothers the world over? Can the doily ever change its image from a kitschy throwback to yesteryear, into something hip and cool? Maybe not–but that’s not going to stop me from trying. Let’s see what we can do to cast a new light on doilies, bringing them proudly into the 21st century home (and using them for your kindergartener’s Valentine cards doesn’t count).
My first doily project is a set of boxes. I envision these at a baby shower or a little girl’s birthday party. How cute would these look filled with candy, flowers or confetti?
All you need for these easy boxes is a doily and glue. As an optional step, you can paint the boxes with Mod Podge to make them a bit sturdier or paint them in your theme colors.
Step 1
- fold the edges of the doily to create a square in the middle
Step 2
- fold the “corners” so that the overlapping flap is on the inside of the box
Step 3
- glue the flaps to the inside of the box
- repeat on the remaining corners
In 3 short steps, you’ve got yourself an adorable box! Now get creative….paint them, weave ribbon through the edges or put them at each place setting at a garden party!
Not too old-fashioned, right?
